Can't shift into reverse unless ignition turned off

i have a 95 900s conv, and recently, i've been unable to go into reverse unless i turn the car off. i took the car to my local (independent) shop, and they tried replacing the washer (not the bushing, i'm told), and this did no good. I had to replace the clutch cable a few years back (the car has only 59,500 miles, roughly), and the shop tried 'adjusting' the cable this time. they tell me the shift linkage looks good, but i'm just wondering if i DID go ahead and do the shift linkage upgrade, if i would get 'reverse' back?? right now, the shop told me i can continue driving the car--that i'm not hurting it by continuing this way. they said as long as i don't mind turning the car off to get reverse, there's not a problem. IF a shift linkage upgrade would FIX this problem, i'd much prefer to do this.
one thing i should mention: RIGHT before i noticed the problem with reverse, i had a valet parking attendant come find me at the end of a dinner w/customers--telling me he couldn't get the keys out (i told him he'd have to put it in reverse to get them out) of the car. i'm hoping, in his attempts, he didn't force something in the gearing.
any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
