Hi. I have a 1996 Saab 900S (non-turbo). I have 99,000 miles on the car and I purchased it with 90,000 miles. I'm not sure how the previous owner took care of the car, but I maintained it very well. I poseted my problem before, but i'll repost it and be more specific about the details:

I was on the highway when my car started to make a rattling sound from the engine compartment. The car began to clank and sound like an old gas-powered lawnmower (or like a diesel truck/car). I drove the car in that condition for 2 miles until I could get off of the highway. As soon as I got off the highway, my car stalled and would not turn back on (the check engine light was on after the car died…but no warning lights prior to that). I immediately had my car towed to the local Saab mechanic.

Now the mechanic is telling me that he is 99% certain that he would either need to rebuild the engine or have it replaced. He said that would cost me almost as much as the car is worth ($3000-$4500) to repair or replace the engine. The car currently makes a loud knocking noise and the engine struggles to ‘turnover’ (turnover is the term the mechanic used meaning that it has trouble going to high RPMs). The car does not crank and the mechanic needs to hook up the battery to some device in order for it to start. Once the car starts, the engine rattles and again sounds like a diesel car or lawnmower.

He also offered to buy the car off of me for $500-$800. They said they would try to fix it themselves and do with it as they please.

I’m not sure which path to take on this. I guess what I really want to know is:
1) has anyone ever had this happen to their car (the lawnmower/diesel/loud/rattling engine noise)?
2) Does it seem like the repair will cost more than $1500?
3) does the engine need to be replaced like the mechanic said?
4) Would a broken bearing cause this type of malfunction or engine noise?

The thing is, i don't want to have the car towed to another mechanic for another assessment if the car is practically dead. If chances are it's dead, i'd rather just get rid of it and sell it to the mechanic that currently has it.

Any Input would be appreciated. Thanx.
