I used a large hole saw to remove just the centers of the inner structural ribs of the box. This let me push the new tube in nearly as far as the original tube, & removed all the turbulence-creating ribs from the air-flow path. I also slash-cut the tube so that a larger opening was pointing towards the face of the filter, rather than blowing air across it. Having this much tube into the box also meant it fit securely w/o having to bolt it down.
The flare on that speaker tube looks pretty wide. This is great for smoothing the air-flow, but it may be a bit wider than necessary. Does it help your fit if you trim off 1/8"-1/4" around the edge of the flare? Remember, it's not a ram-effect scoop. It shouldn't matter if there's anything directly in front of it, so long as it's not disrupting the air-flow across the flared edges & into the tube.
