How often was the dyno oil changed in miles and months?
We see too many engines with dyno failing from sludge. You can easily remove the valve cover and look for sludge*. If sludge free, you can switch to synthetic. If not sludge free, the oil that you were using was not up to the challenge of this engine and your maintenance cycles. If there is sludge, there is a product called AutoRX which is effective at cleaning this up. Some discoloration of the metal under the VC is normal and expected. Anything thick, or 'coffee grounds' is a concern.
* You should probably get a new VC gasket. These are around 1/2 the cost of that from the dealer, from some TSN sponsors. Do not stress the PCV TEE, as it will be brittle from heat and age.
A true synthetic will resist oxidation and polymerization when dyno oils fail. The hotest spot in the engine oil system is not the turbo, it is the upper piston ring. Conventional oils may coke up and you get stuck rings. Castrol FakeTek(tm) is not a true synthetic. It is a modfied petroleum base stock. For the money, you can use Mobil 1 and get the real thing. M1 0W40 is the best, unless you live in a very hot climate.
You do not have to stick to 10W30 oils. Many are finding the xW40 oils to be better and the factory fills are now xW40 oil.
There are cases were sludge deposits in an engine are 'tight' and not going anywhere. Synthetic oils can clean and release deposits. But having large globs of goo released by synthetic might be harmful. So this is a concern.
