You can awlays pinch the evap hose off so it can't flow. The evap solenoid is pulsed, maybe it sticks open. But with a T5, that should make the engine run faster.
When things cut out, do you get the idiot lights on, or goes dark. Does the SID say 'checking' or what? If dark, no lights or SID displaying 'checking', that is suggestive of interupted power through the ignition relay.
