if you try to start the car without the clutch floored the engine will just crank. when the clutch IS floored the car starts, but as soon as you let it out in any gear (including neutral) it stalls.
what originally happened is that jen was driving it and couldn't get into 5th. she hit the clutch, put it in neutral and pulled off the road. when she let the clutch up it stalled & has been doing the same thing ever since.
it's been in her driveway for months now. there are a couple of new developments that i hope will help pinpoint the problem.
without it being driven or really even touched for the last couple months, you can no longer get the car into 3rd. it slides into any other gear, including 5th, just not 3rd.
also, i tried pulling on the clutch cable. no luck. i also checked out the shift linkage and, as far as i can tell, it seems good. the washer doesn't look like it's come up. the whole linkage DOES have play, though. not a lot, just a wiggle back and forth, but i'm not sure how much or how little it should have.
i honestly have no idea what it could be -- i thought it would be the shift linkage but it does appears to be in working order, as does the clutch cable.
the clutch pedal pressure is as good as it's ever been and with the car running you can shift it into any gear but 3rd without problems -- that is, of course, with the car at a dead stop with the clutch floored.
any help would be greatly appreciated. a mechanic is the very last resort because jen is a student and has very little money to work with. i'd like to just have it checked out by a saab mechanic, but in order to do that it would have to be towed to and from the mechanic, so.
thanks!
