I recently replaced my rear speakers (97 SET 5Dr) with Sony XS-V6921 speakers (180W Max ??-RMS). I used these speakers in my Alfa 164 with the stock head unit (don't know and can't find the Watts) and they sounded pretty decent with rich bass. In the Saab, they sound better than the stock, but that isn't saying much. There is absolutely no bass and they start distorting at higher volumes. I have the polarity correct and even switched it to make sure. The question is, where does the problem lie?

Do I need an amp to drive these speakers or a different pair of speakers? The stock speakers are matched to the head unit and they don't have any bass either. You would think 6X9s would have excellent bass. Are people driving these Infinity Kappas with the head unit and if so, how is the bass response?

Is the way the speakers are mounted inside the car the culprit? If you set speakers on a table there is no bass. The speakers are not enclosed from the rest of the car except by the felt trunk liner. In the Alfa the speakers mount on the rear deck with the hole opening to the trunk. Would isolating the speakers better help?

I don't know what the answers are and wanted to bounce it off of some other people before I spend any more money.
