It's true that DI cassettes are a common failure on the 4 cylinders. Because it is an electrical component, it's difficult to asssess how close a unit is to failure. It is a consumable item and will almost certainly go at some point. Having said that, failures are not that frequent. Mine went after 195,000 kms. Some people do carry a spare in their trunk for 'back-up'. Not a bad idea if you can spare the cash, but there may be other things to spend it on - tires, exhaust, mortgage! Personally, I don't carry a spare.

If you do want to play it safe, buy a spare from one of the sponsors of this board (eEuroparts are good and offer free shipping over a certain value). Don't replace the old unit until it fails, as it may have plenty of life left in it. Keep the spare in the trunk. If you think you can change a set of spark plugs, then you can change a DI cassette.

Saabs are service intensive and repairs are expensive at dealers. 3 pieces of advice:

1) Check out a parts site such as eEurpoarts so that you can get parts cheap.
2) Find a good independent mechanic who has Saab knowledge and is happy to use OEM replacement parts (i.e. if you provide a part, he will install it).
3) Get a Haynes manual (amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1859605125/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1859605125&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork) and at least learn how to do simple DIY and service items. It will keep your bills down and you'll get much more enjoyment out of your Saab.

Can't comment on the frequency hydraulic clutch failure, mine is mechanical. Don't worry about losing control though. The worst that will happen if the linkage fails is you can't change gear. If the plate itself fails (and this is the same regardless of mechanical or hydraulic) then you lose power transfer. Neither should cause loss of control. As a reference point, my 94 900 SET is at 205,000 kms and still on the original clutch.

Welcome to the Saab club.
