Hello board.
First of all I want to say thanks. Without this board I'd have never known about or attempted to do this myself.
Today was a perfect day to check the head bolt torque on my '97 SE-T, especally as it's approaching 95k miles and I'm taking a trip next weekend.
The valve cover was harder to remove than I expected. Even after hitting it with a rubber mallet it wouldn't budge.
Here's a tip.
Remove the 2 10mm bolts that hold the oil-filler neck to the valve cover.
Pry with a heavy screwdriver wedged between the engine hoist point and the "ear" on the valve cover where the 2 10mm bolts were.... pushing toward the drivers side of the car. POP! Off it came (finally).
I was glad to see that there was NO sludge in the top of the enginge!
Headbolts. I'm sure it was posted here before, but I didn't see it when I was checking out the procedure before I started. The head bolts are REVERSE TORX, ie the look like a torx bit sticking up from the head. They're REVERSE TORX #16
None of mine were loose, but I can tell you they're all tighter now than they were when I started. They loosened up easily. Following the bulletin at Townsend, tightened to 30lbs, 44lbs, then one quarter turn. What a back breaker that last quarter turn is :)
Waste of time? Who's to say since none of mine were loose but this will be one less thing nagging in the back of my mind!
