The alternator is harder to get out than you think. I had the Voltage regulator/brush pack go on mine and it was a bear to get out. There is a part of a bracket on the engine in the 95 900s that gets in the way. The bracket blocks a black plastic cap that covers the alternator where the brushpack/voltage regulator is.
In order for me to get that off, I had to remove the alternator from the bracket. (which means I had to take the belt off... etc... and the alternator won't come out without moving the exhaust and taking it out from underneath, or moving a hell of alot of stuff to get it out the top (barely)...
The whining may not be the brushpack... it could be the bearings, in which case you would be better off getting a lifetime warranty alternator and getting it in there. In addition, if you DO get a new alternator, make sure you get it with the right pulley (2 kinds) preinstalled unless you want to really mess with trying to get the old moved to the new alternator.
Sorry to be a spoilsport... but in my experience this was a bear of a driveway job to do... Find an indy to do it cheaper!
