'95 900 SET Convertible Top Replacement

Last week, I broke my rear window. I found out that it is not possible to replace only the rear window, the entire top must be replaced.
My local dealer quoted over $5,000 including labor to replace, which includes the top, glass, headliner, and conversion (?) kit. I suspect the conversion kit has something to do with using 96-98 top on a 95 auto, but haven't been able to confirm this. I'm not inclined to spend this amount of money on an auto with a market value only slightly greater.
A '95 aftermarket top (including integral glass) and headliner can be purchased from a couple of vendors on-line for less than $700. Installation would be DIY, which doesn't intimidate me, even though I've never done a top before.
I would like to have a top where the window is a separate part (96-98 style), in the (unlikely) event the window is ever broken again. But then, I don't want to get into window installation if I don't have to. I'd just as soon have the window pre-installed.
Does anyone have experience in a DIY top replacement on a '95 900 SET? From what vendor was your top purchased? Are there specific issues to be concerned about in a DIY installation? There seem to be several alternatives to consider. I'd sure like to get this right the first time. Decisions, decisions!
Thanks in advance for your replies.
