It's recommended to change both. Try changing the other brakelight as well. The computer measures the resistance across both bulbs. If there is a discrepancy, it gives the failure message. Put in the same type of bulb in the other brake light to get the same resistance. That should take care of the brakelight failure thing. For the time for service message, it is possible that the interval set for the message is up. It will go out after a certain number of starts, or it can be reset.
