I guess it suppose to save the exhaust manifold from cracking due to expansion/contraction during the heat cycles.
They have been using those long studs some 30 years now with bad results.
I have since many years installed the short studs all over and have yet to see a cracked manifold.
As a comparison, back in early eigthties, cracked manifolds were very common on the 8 valve turbo engines even with the long studs installed from factory. So I don't think the studs are the answer but more the design of the manifold, since I have yet to see a 16 valve manifold cracked.
