OK. I've figured out most of it. And I may hav done some of the damage when I forced the door back into position.

The door is held by a check strap. The wind blew the door open past the point where check strap normally ends. When I forced the door back to a closed position the check strap was out of position so the strap cut into the sheet metal of the door frame toward the interior (which explains why it was so hard to close). The frame of the door where the door spring assembly is bolted against the door was also bent (also likely when I forced the door back - my option was to leave the door wide open until this got figured out).

I had to remove the door panel, make 2 steel plates to bolt together, insode and outside the door spring assembly mount point, to bend the steel back to it's original shape. With that done and now able to see how the mechanism works I was able to place the check strap back to it's correct place.

One small problem remains. The door now can open beyond where the check strap ends. Of course if you open beyond that point you have to reposition the check strap, which is simple now that I know what going on.

My question is, did something break away at the end of the check strap that normally stops it from going off the end???? Does a new check strap assembly fix this in some way? Neither the check strap itself nor the spring assembly appear damaged.

ps. and my thanks to Chris Hutter. Your web site is great. I just repaired one of my remotes. Just a dab of hot glue on the inside of one of the button because it would not depress properly.
