Yada,
Here's what you have to do to if it's necessary to get to the part that the ball and socket is located in...it's called the gearshift lever housing. Go to saabsavior.com and look up his short shifter kit for the
9-3/900 and you'll see what the part looks like.
You start by taking out the passenger seat. Then you have to remove the center console. You start this by beginning at the rear (by taking out the rear ashtray) and working your way forward. The trickiest part is the panel holding in the window and door switches. Don't force it or pry on it...there's a little tab underneath where you can't see it...just push the tab forward with some sort of small prying device. The panel just to the rear of the switch panel is also tricky...you have to get your hand under there and free it from underneath.
You'll also have to remove the lower part of the front of the dash that houses the heating/air cond. controls. Once you've done all of this, the gearshift lever housing will still be secured to the floor. Remove the screws that secure it to the floor and you'll be able to get it up, but not out. If you have to remove the housing, you'll have to get under the piece and remove the bolt holding the bottom of the gearshift lever to the transmission linkage bushing. If it's an allen-head bolt, make sure that it's seated all the way in, otherwise you risk the possibility of rounding it off and then you've got another issue.....don't ask me how I know!!!!
I hope you can make your repairs without having to go through all of this, but if you do, I'll keep my eye on this post. Good Luck
Steve
