A friend has just received this car from her brother. It has not been well cared for, and these are the things that are obviously wrong with it. She is wondering if she should keep the car after finding out how much it is going to cost to replace the tonneau motor. The car has 65000 miles and is in physically good shape. I have some specific questions about repairs after searching this board.
Tonneau motor- I am seeing that the dealer price for a new motor assembly is as much as $2000. Someone posted a link that it could be found for as little as $250, but that link is not good. Does anyone know of a good source for a low price quality assembly?
The clutch engages at the bottom of the throw. I'll try pulling the cable, but am guessing that it may need replacing. I've seen a post that a Nissan cable can be used to replace the Saab version, and is stronger. Anyone have experience with this cable and how to do the modification? I don't think the clutch itself has been replaced, so probably looking at that too.
The upper idler pulley is noisy and needs replacing. I've seen discussion of bypassing the lower idler pulley by using a shorter belt. Is this a good modification, and what, other than the cost of a pulley , is to be gained?
Any other thoughts about this model? Someone posted a while back that they got tired of the constant repairs, bought a '98 900C and have not had problems since. Is this a lemon year that should be avoided?
Thanks in advance for your advise.
