My fiance has a '96 900S with the 2.3 16V non-turbo engine. The check engine light is on, our local dealer called up codes PO341 and PO422, and quoted approx. $1900.00 to replace the catalytic converter and distributor. (Of course it would be much less through an independant shop). The car has 116,000 miles on it, and we are thinking about upgrading to a 9-5 wagon.

I think it would be best (under any circumstances but especially if we plan to sell it in the near future) to get a recycled converter and a recycled distributor from a local salvage yard, and either install them myself or have an independant shop do the work. Some questions:

*How difficult would it be to do the work myself? (I've done fluid/filter changes, brakes, and engine swap and clutch on a VW bus, and a lot of work on a Corvair I had). I noticed that this model year has a somewhat different converter with a long engine-side pipe and flange and I'm concerned that installing it might involve more than the usual 4 rusted/seized bolts.

*Is the distributor difficult to install and does it need to be adjusted afterwards... or is it "plug and play"?

*What would be a reasonable labor charge to pay an independant shop to do the work?

*Are those engine codes reliable? In other words, can I be sure that the catalytic converter and distributor are really the problem?
