Auto-RX? Mobil 1 versus Amsoil

Well, Dean... I have castrol 10w 30 high mileage in right now. I bought the car about 1200 miles ago and one of the first things I did was change the oil. They checked several things and found that the atf was nasty and the radiator fluid was also disgusting. That made me assume the previous owner was not too great about maintenance.
I'm too much of a novice to pull the pan to check for sludge or pull the valve covers so this is either preventative or a cleaning that I don't know yet that I need. I've heard a few nightmare stories about engine cleaners weakening or loosening seals or rings that require either expensive repairs or the demise of the engine. I've also heard that auto-rx is gentle so does not provide that threat but I can't afford more repairs and I don't want to buy a new car.
Anyway, right now I have dyno 10w 30 but I will use dyno x 40 for the rinse cycle and then I was hoping to switch over to either mobil 1 or amsoil. I keep getting conflicting reports on those two as well... some say amsoil is the most destructive force on earth while others say it is blatantly superior to Mobil 1. I'm not even positive it is wise to switch over to synthetic with 140k and the likelihood that it has been an all dyno engine in the past.
Dean, if you have time, I'd love you to weigh in on all of this if you have the time. Anyone else with experiences here are welcome to contribute as I would appreciate all of your input.
