Keeping "Old Blue' - a tire question

Underwhelming interest from the ad-reading public in my much modded and well-maintined Sky Blue 900SET, so I have decided to swap the stock ECU back in for the Speedparts Stage II (may sell, may save), and let my 21-yr-old son take it over. His '95 Saturn SL2 beater goes to his older brother (a long story there).
Advice welcome:
Tires - I know we've beaten this topic to death with a blunt instrument, but the S-03s are at the wear bars on front (18,000 miles) and down to a couple of 32nds on the back. I loved those tires, but wonder if I want to treat #2 son to another mega-expensive set like that. What would you recommmend in the moderately-priced performance tire area - primary concern is his safety, wet handlng, emergency braking, etc. SoCal weather - no snow, winter rains and lots of dry pavement. I've always been a Bridgestone loyalist, but willing to look farther if it makes sense.
Thanks in advance, and Anders, I'm sure I'll be introducing Matt to you before long....
