Singing serpentine belt

A couple of months ago, I experienced an upper idler pulley failure. I did the short belt mod when I replaced the pulley. My new belt is a Gates 2500mm (nominal)… I think actual length is 2470 or 2480. The mark on my belt tensioner is at the “loose” end of play, but within the range.
Since that time, my belt has been “singing” intermittently. The sound is not like what I am accustomed to hearing from a slipping belt. It is definitely not screeching. It only occurs when the engine is warm, and even then it is intermittent. It seems to originate around the water pump, (the only load driven by the outside of the belt).
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what is the solution? I’m ready to scrap the short belt mod and return to the design configuration.
