Sad to say but it might very well be the reverse shift fork and lever inside the transmission since they were of inferior quality in the early years.
If you hear grinding when going into reverse you also have a clutch problem. That could either be an out of adjusted clutch cable or the whole clutch assembly.
With the early years of the NG900 it usually starts with a bad clutch cable and clutch assembly that doesn't release properly, then the driver starts using more and more force going into reverse and even trying to hold the gear in place stopping it from popping out. That will slowly bend the shift fork inside transmission and when the clutch assembly and cable is finally replaced it might be too late and damage to transmission done.
The best way is to find a good Saab indy and have him adjust the linkage properly and have a look at the clutch and cable. If that doesn't change anything you might need a new transmission and clutch.
