When it stalls, what happens to the radio, dash guages, SID etc?

Does the SID ever go through a check sequence when you have not turned the key?

This does not sound like a sensor issue as that would lead to CEl codes specific to the faulty sensor.

Please answer the above two questions and note any other electrical activities.

Check the battery connections and battery cables. Follow them yank/twist to detect anything not tight. Follow ground cables to the engine and chassis.

Any electrical work done? audio or cel phone mods? You could get at the ECU and remove/reseat the connector and check ground points on the adjacent A piller.

The fact that the engine starts and runs normal rules out low fuel pressure. An electrical fault that cuts the fuel pump to zero pressure would be another issue. You could check the pump wires at the fuel tank... not easy.

Any signs of wires damaged by mice?

The crankshaft position sensor can cause problems. Find out where it is and check its ohmns. Then when it stalls, check the ohms and is you get an open circuit, thats the problem. I have seen a few reports of that sensor doing intermitant things.

You did not tell us what the CEL code was! You are pre-ODBII, so thats a problem.

Check the hose from the TB to the map sensor. Cracks or spilts. Also check the hose from the evap control system solenoid valve for damage. Cracks can occur on the bottom that you have to feel for.

When it stalls, measure ohms from the block to the ground cable connector at the battery. Should measure a fraction of an ohm or zero ohms. If not, there is a ground problem. Sometimes cables can corrode at or in the battery terminal connector.
