You can learn how to DIY just about anything here, just guage your comfort level for the project. Really, you can take apart and put together again an entire car with just a good wrench set and a screwdriver, that's all the skills you'll need, plus a little bit of risk taking, some elbow grease and some PB Blaster (for those rusted bolts)
Start slow, like changing the wiper blades or a blown light bulb. Oil change / transmission fluid change comes next, Start buying GOOD tools, you don't need to get them all at once, just get what you need for a particular project (but buy in sets, like wrench sets, its cheaper). Work your way up to more difficult projects. Find a buddy that knows how to DIY.
Finally, even if the project "sounds" bad, like engine noise, post the symptoms here, you never know.
Good luck.
