Clutch or Syncro or What?

Car: 98 900S 2.3, 106,000 miles, original clutch & original cable, and linkages. In short, never any work on tranny to date.
Last week on downshifting from 5th to 4th it was hard to pull the stick down into 4th gear. Almost like having to pull it semi-hard to get it out.
Checked it several times and every time there was a varying degree of having to pull to get it out. Not like anything I have ever experienced
with a manual.
Upshifting is no problem and downshifting on all others is fine.
Driving is probably 75% freeway over the life, so I have been into and out of 5th a fair amount.
Finally, I do not ride the clutch, there is not (nor has there ever been) any grinding or difficulty with the tranmission, and my habit from day one is to briefly allow the transmission to pass through the "netural" setting
when up/down shifting in the belief that would allow the syncros to mesh properly and forestall any premature failure.
Any thoughts?
