How to buy an NG?

I am the proud owner of a 87-900S that is just about rounding the 200K mark... Despite the usual problems, most of which were DIY fixes (blown slave cylinder, master cylinder, shocks, engine mounts, etc.), the car (as well as this site) has convinced me to stay with Saab (forever, maybe). However, I am debating the purchase of a newer model.
My question is this. I am looking at mid 90's (94ish to 98ish) 900 models (Turbo, ideally). Are there any years or engine types (e.g. V6) that I should stay away from? I feel pretty capable in DIY jobs, but something like a headgasket might be too much. Is the NG DIY friendly? And minor problems aside, is there a big looming no-no that I don't know about?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott
