Rod knock in '95 NG900 n/a

This car "quit" and my brother and I checked it. Started up OK but knocked like the dickens. Lowered the subframe and pan and found the #2 or #3 rod bearings shot; paper thin and all kinds of play (it's the one nearest the oil crossover pipe). The crank looks like it has a bit of additional bearing material on the journal. Can we take this off with emery cloth and replace the bearing or does the crank have to come out for proper machining? 172K, lots of sludge in the head. Apparently the P.O. kept Saab-recommended oil change intervals. We've done the last 40K every 3K but must have gotten in too late. Thanks for any advice. (I drive an '88 9K myself.)
