TCS system engages all the time

I have a 96 900SE Conv. V6 with about 95,000 miles on it. Bought it used with abou 50,000 miles on it. As I understand the TCS system, it is supposed to engage when it senses the wheels are going to slip from a stop (as in ice/snow/wet surface) and keep the tires from spinning. For about the last year (30,000 miles), it seems to engage just about every time I start from a full stop, regardless of weather, temperature, or road conditions, and regardless of whether I have just started driving or have been driving for hours. This has started to prove dangerous- if I don't remember to push the "turn TCS off" button before trying to jump out into traffic, the car bogs down, acellerates INCREDIBLY slowly, and I end up looking like I don't know how to merge into traffic. Now, I am getting pretty good at remembering to turn the TCS off, but it is annoying (and frightening) if I forget. Is there a way to just disable this whole system (or fix it without big $$)?
Thanks in advance, Jack
