Balance Chain removal thru the Oil Pan? Help

Ughh...my Indie said the balance chains/sprockets are in need of replacing. He could tell by the sound as they were "slapping" around. Also the CEL just came on. I read a post where the balance chains were accessable after dropping the oil pan. Then they can be extracted by breaking a couple links. Sounds to good to be true?!? No engine disassembly, no front cover, sub frame, etc., etc. removal??? The post also said the oil galley to the tensioner "should" remain blocked if you simply left the tensioner, and other guides in.
The question of the day?? How likely is it for the tensioner to come loose and I lose oil pressure? The pictures I saw looked like the tensioner was originally held in be two bolts...pretty secure? Any other problems with doing it this way?
I have 149,000 miles on the engine and I'm hesitant to drop $1800 bucks into it. This '94 900S 2.3L non-turbo ain't worth it.
