I think what Christoph is referring to is bars that connect the top of the struts, front and back rather than the lower anti-roll bars.
When I upgraded the shocks in my Saab I noticed that in back they bolted directly to body sheet metal at the top rather than any reinforced subframe. It seemed to me to be a pretty weak attachment point. I'd imagine that the reinforcement should make the back end a lot more solid and help the shock geometry better resist deflection under load.
