The recesses for the seal get filled with deposits from the coolant. I had to carve those away. (95SET)

When the stat body is bolted up, the mating surfaces of the body contact metal to metal and tighening up the bolts will not increase the load on the rubber seal, but might damage the threads.

So you can get a flat sharpening stone and 'strike' off the engine side to make sure that it is smooth and flat. Do not use a stone dry on aluminum. Wet-dry sandpaper on a sanding block would work well, or a flat file if you think that you have a good hand for that kind of work. You will need to clean out the tapped threads in anycase to remove cuttings and grit.

I can't remember the side(s) which have the recess for the seal ring. You can remove some of the metal to increase the 'crush' on the seal. If the part that comes off, it can be 'lapped' on wet-dry black sandpaper on a flat surface, such as the kitchen counter. Use lots of water and perhaps a drop of dish soap. I had a problem like this on a Volvo a few decades ago. I took a used rubber seal and cut a flat ring out of the seak and stacked that in with the stat and seal. That worked. With my 95SET I did 'finish' the parts and used one new stat seal.
