No More Balance Chains !! ...long

My '94 900S is the latest convert to run with out balance chains.
The Indie initially quoted me $1600 bucks to replace them. Thanks to the SaabNet and other related posts, I learned about the option to pull the chains altogether by going through the oil pan. Dropping the pan is a VERY Good 1st step to determine your course of action in a balance chain failure. In my case, several of the teeth had sheared off the BC sprockets. I only drove about 10 miles when I noticed the noise and towed the car in to be safe....glad I did. The oil pan only had the broken teeth and NO signs of plastic from the chain guides, etc. Thus my high mileage engine (149K) was an excellent candidate for the chain pull (plus there's no way I'm dropping $1600-1800 into THAT engine). Note that I had to twist my mechanics arm to do the 4 hour job. Seems like no one in these parts heard that an engine can even run without balance chains. He won't even warranty the job.....that was part of the "deal".
Anyways life is good again. My engine "maybe" makes 9% more rumble or so at idle. And in motion I don't feel any difference at all. Someone once said it will sound like a regular Classic 900. That is an accurate statement. Thanks again to all the posts, especially from Swedecar, Buck and Yeehaa. Probably saved me $1100 dollars.
