Hi Guys! Read a post by Damien from Jan. 2002 describing the same symptoms as mine. He dropped his fuel tank and found that the plastic bucket that the fuel pump sits in had a spiral crack in it. This permitted air to suck in when the fuel level got below the level of the crack. I dropped my tank and found the whole bottom of the fuel bucket fractured and dislodged from the rest of the bucket. Scrapes on the outside bottom of the tank indicate that at some time the tank had been hit. I was able to order a fuel bucket minus pump (my pump has 68,000 miles) for 30.00$ from English-Swedish car spares (purchased from them many times). This was a tough one to diagnose, hope this post helps.
