Hey All, I usually hang out on the performance board, but this issue/question is regarding ng900's.
I have a 1986 900 SPG project car. The motor/head/turbo/trans are old school B202 hardware, but the ignition/fuel/boost control is all Trionic. It has a 1995 OBD-I computer, MAP sensor, Temp sensor(s), DI Cassette, etc. just like any newgen 900 or 9000.
This is considered an "engine change" according to the Cal BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) and must undergo a severe prostate examination to get registered. I just got back from the appointment. I'm not smiling.
The biggest issue is misinformation. Their research (Alldata & Mitchel) says that a 1995 900 2.0L Turbo should have an electric air pump ("smog pump"), EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation), and a diaphragm-type valve for the charcoal canister with a "signal" line and a "flow" line (sounds like the older system before the solenoid control). I know this is not the case...can anyone verify this on their own cars? Is there another source with correct information?
The full list of "issues" from the exam:
* Air Injection System: Install/Repair complete system or provide proof from Saab if not required on 1995 2.0L Turbo.
* Catalytic Convertor: Install/Replace Catalytic Convertor / OBDI for 1995 2.0L Turbo.
* Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Install/Repair complete system or provide proof from Saab if not required on 1995 2.0L Turbo.
* Fuel Evaporation System: missing signal hose, illegal fuel filter inline with main hose. Missing diaphragm valve.
* Computer Feedback Control System: Vehicle speed sensor not reading accurately (the computer, not the speedo). Remove rear O2 sensor.
* Transmission needs to comply to 1995 specs.
* Turbocharger system needs to comply to 1995 specs.
* Failed HC emissions 102 measured 53 limit
* Failed CO emissions .70 measured .50 limit
* Failed NO emissions 2050 measured 738 limit
As you can see, on top of everything else I was pissed off about, the car failed miserably at the tailpipe! Aacckk! This car passed cleanly in a pretest about 6 months ago, so I wonder how I screwed it up?
