I think this is nuts and I would kill for an explanation... here it goes:
Today, I finally jerked my battery out of my car and hosed off the engine compartment. There were a couple of spots that were rusty and several that were exceptionally dirty. I sprayed some bug and tar remover on these spots, let it sit a minute, and hosed it off.
I left the hood up and let it dry all afternoon. This evening, I put the battery back in and opted to take it for a drive to see if it had dried.
As a footnote, I also sprayed water into the tailpipe hoping to rinse out the muffler and maybe even reach my catalytic converter which I suspect may have been clogged. I mention this just because this may be where my explanation lies... I'm not sure yet...
Anyway...
I get in the car, and it immediately feels more potent than before. That makes no sense to me at all! To really throw me off, my sid starts at 7.8 mpg and within ten minutes, shoots up to 25.3 (to give you perspective, I rarely get over 19.6 mpg).
So, have any of you had this same experience? If so, did you ever pinpoint what freed up all that power and fuel economy? Even if this hasn't happened to you, do any of you have any idea what may be the cause of this great fortune?
I almost feel like I'm driving a new car... I only ask because I want to make sure I know to do it again if my fuel economy starts to slump again and I'd love to know to avoid whatever problem I must have inadvertantly fixed.
