1994 900S, 2.3L, 104K miles. This weekend was the first time *I* did a full coolant flush and fill (3rd time total), change thermostat and upper/lower radiator hoses. It went a lot faster than I thought, considering I tend to mess it up the first time I try something! I want to thank everyone on this board for all the great info here! The car ran great today with no leaks. Here was my procedure and observations.
1. I drained all the old green stuff from the car. Removed the lower rad hose and used some large pans to catch it all.
2. Removed the t-stat housing. The old t-stat looked pretty good, but it was a good time to replace it. I was surprised the housing looked very clean. I can confirm the upper bolt on the housing is a pain to get at! Used Mattais.se’s site (great site, thanks!), I had the torx and 12mm bolts on my engine.
3. Bolted the t-stat housing back on without the t-stat in place. Next I flushed the radiator and engine with the water hose until it ran clear.
4. Next I flushed both radiator and engine with distilled water. 1 gallon in the radiator, 2 gallons in the engine. I figure this will give me a good distilled water base to work with when I fill with coolant. One tip, you can the lower radiator hose, attach it to the top of the radiator, and use it as a funnel for the gallon water jug.
5. Unbolted t-stat housing and put in the new t-stat. Made sure air hole was up and seal in place. Replaced all bolts and tightened.
6. Replaced upper and lower radiator hoses. Got them from eeuroparts along with new clamps. The old hoses were original, so it was time. The insides of the hoses had a white substance on them, looked like deposits from tap water that was used? Don't know, but I am glad I flushed with distilled water.
7. Filled coolant reservoir with 1 gallon Prestone 5/150 extended life. This is "dex-cool compatible", I decided to go with this after reading good stuff on this board. I read a lot about this stuff, and I am comfortable using it, seems to work well with Saabs.
8. Started engine and topped off as the level went down.
Engine ran great on a hot Texas day, I noticed the fan does not turn on as much as it used to (maybe a function of the new t-stat 82 degrees?)
Anyway, thanks to everyone on this board, great info here and I can add yet another "DIY" project to my arsenal.
