Aftermarket pwr antenna

My mast broke on my pwr antenna and instead of replacing it, I opted to order a new one from a place called antennaX.com. It is very similar to the stock unit except...it has the ground on a wire instead of running it thru the unit and out of the mount.
I have tried every possible connection. The wires are getting pwr. I blew a fuse testing them! But I cannot get the stupid antenna to work. Does anyone have any recommendations? I think I have it grounded ok. I've got it grounded to one of the bolts coming up from the floor in front of the tail lights. I've tried moving the ground but nothing seems to work.
Has anyone got any recs. for testing the power to the antenna itself. Can I hook up a pwr souce to the antenna to make sure it is not at fault? Otherwise, I'm just going to toss it and buy a whip unit from Autozone.... :(
