Go to your local dealer TODAY and get a new upper idler pulley for the serpentine belt, replace it IMMEDIATELY.
99.9% chance that is the source of the whirring noise. Once they start to make noise, the bearing will seize at a moments notice taking the belt with it. Should this happen, the waterpump is no longer being driven, head overheats and warps.
For the A/C, try resetting the controller. Directions are in the owners manual (cant recall offhand how it's done). Once it's self test is done, it should display a zero (no faults).
Tranny fluid... cant hurt :)
If you dont know how old the DI Cassette is, I'd pick up a spare.
New NGK plugs.
Vacuum hoses... time to replace them, not a big job.
If Im missing something, Im sure the real pro's will jump on in :)
Enjoy your 97 but replace that idler RIGHT NOW!
