Hi Mike,
If you want to get the code off you can invest in the OBD-II software and cable. I did this several years ago and found having this very useful. You'll need a laptop to talk to the interface and collect data. The real value is that if it is intermittant it may take hours to capture. Even if the local dealer or shop had a TECH II they won't leave it hooked up that long in most cases.
You can also get standalone devices these days for less than $200 (Canadian). They can't collect as much long term data but they are not as complex as the software/laptop combo. I have not used this or the palm pilot solutions nor have I captured using the ground of the pin.
The main reason I would would advocate the use of an external device to capture is because some codes are not persistant (like that generated by IAC); the code appears and disappears and I needed to replay the capture to see the data (replay is a neat feature).
The big trick with these things is knowing what the data means but I was able to capture the shudder caused by IAC valve which the dealer never did in repeated visits.
Hope that helps,
Michael B.
