A faulty ground conection in the boot for example will show warning light in the dashboard. This is because the light circuit will be brocken and the central electronics control module will think a bulb is blown up. The same can happen with the engine management system. If a sensor say O2, temperature, etc. has got a poor ground connection then the management system will flag a CEL in some cases. Identifying the code will pinpoint at the faulty sensor. However, before replacing sensor the ground connection and sensor connectors should be checked.
Simon, The ground location on my car that cause the problem is in the boot. If it causes a problem you should see a warning light in your dashboard when you press the brakes. If you see nothing that ground connection is probably OK in your car. The ground connection I am taking about is in the boot left hand side (as you open the boot) on the floor pan just under the rear fixed cluster lights. In my car there is a small cutout in the carpet that allows access.
