I have owned an 85 900 Turbo, an 89 900 base model, an 89 Turbo 4 door, and a 90 900 Turbo Convertible. I recently decided to go with newer and picked up a 1996 900S, What immediately caught my attention was the build quality, the NG900 seems to be built better, with a real solid and comfortable feel in the cockpit.
Furthermore, the engine layout is alot more user friendly. I broke down and bought an automatic this time, and it shifts incredibly crisp, and kicks down just when you need it to. Saab made their auto a 4 speed this ime around instead of the old 3 speed auto which was very noisy...
All in all, I love the car, but it cant dip into turns like the old saabs, its still a well balanced car, but not like the classic 900. If I had the time and patience to constantly upkeep a classic 900, I'd do it, but the times are a changing and a 93 900 is an 11 year old car.
I say go for it, gove the NG900 a shot, you might be impressed, and this is coming from someone who SWORE he would never get a GM900...
Happy Saabing!
