If you have over 20,000 miles on the car and it has not been running synthetic, I recommend using a good engine flush first. For quick flushes, AMSOIL and BG make the best I know of. Auto-Rx takes quite a bit longer, but is very effective.
If you don't, or won't, flush first, just drain out the old and put in the new (with a new filter, of course). Watch for any sudden increase in oil consumption. If that occurs, change the filter and top off. You might want to change the first batch of synthetic after 5,000 miles or so.
I'm convinced that AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 is the best available, and run it in all my cars. Since I normally drive no more than 10,000 miles a year on any of them, that's when I change oil and filter. With other synthetics, I'd not try to extend the recommended drain oil without using oil analysis.
Should you ever want to go back to non-synthetic, you drain out the old and put in the new.
