I am unfortunately someone that fubared up the selector shaft when I took out the old seal. The expensive silver lining is that I eventually figured out how to take out the old seal without damaging the selector shaft... although by then it was too late...
If you still intend to do it yourself - find a short, thin-handled screwdriver and file down the tip so it is pretty sharp. What you need to do is work the tip into the junction between the old seal and the transmission case - DO NOT, I repeat do not insert anything between the seal and the selector shaft - if you do, you'll only scratch up the selector shaft.
You'll probably have to feel your way around in order to get it in there correctly. Once you've wedged the screwdriver in enough, twist it a bit and work it in further - repeat until the seal is deformed enough that you can remove it. The new seal is easy to install - you just need a seal driver of the appropriate length and diameter.
If you have any doubts though - this may be something you want to pay the $100-$200 to have a mechanic do, as it requires a little finesse to do right.
Good luck!
