Synthetic oils do not create sludge and varnish like dyno oil. And synthetic oils do soften and release such deposits. So when you switch, you can't extend the oil change intervals at first because garbage is been released.
I was changing oil on a 4 stoke lawn mower. Has some synthetic on the shelf and used that. That engine smoked and smelled different for a few weeks and then that eventually stopped. I attribute that to deposits been released and then the rings reseating.
Some neglected engines with heavy dyno deposits can fail when a synthetic is then used as chunks get loose and passages and screens can be plugged up. Such an engine was destined for a disaster in any case.
Just switching to synthetic is not a replacement for AutoRX or an engine flush for an engine that has deposits. The valve cover is easy to pull to look for deposits. A brown stain on the metal is normal. Any thicknesses of deposits or goo is a problem.
Early on, there were some problems with seals leaking and hardening. The seals like dyno and the dyno acted as a softener/plasticiser(sp?). The synthetic oil folks soon learned about what to add to the mix to keep the seals supple. Synthetic base stocks have changed a lot over time as well. And the addative package that is added to the base stock is a mineral oil carrier which will help with the seals as well. Some of the additives do not mix into the synthetic base stocks by themselves.
