brake rotor wear

I just put new front rotors and pads in about 500 miles ago and they've already started to develop some pretty deep grooves - which is a little surprising with so few miles on them. I also have really bad brake squeal. I've doublechecked rattle spring placement and put some anti-squeal compound on them and they still squeak so loud that it's embarrassing. Should I swap out the pads with a different brand? Could it be because the new brake compound is too hard?
