The Saabs have coventional clutches. There is a fiberous clutch that gets clamped between the flywheel and a pressure plate. When the clutch petal is depressed, the pressure plate pulls back slighly and the fiberous clutch disk then is not coupled to the engine rotation. Early production was a cable activated clutch. Later that was replaced with a hydraulic mechanism. The cables can break, but for some they seem to last forever. Might be the duty cycle of city driving that makes them fail. To replace the clutch, which does wear, the tranny needs to be removed, that is a lot of labor. The clutch fork, that opens the clutch by acting on the throwout bearing also wears and often should be renewed. A clutch kit contains a new pressure plate, throwout bearing and clutch disk. The kit does not include the fork.
