I have a 1996 900SE with about 83,000 miles. I just took my car in for a basic service about 3 weeks ago to an independent Saab shop in Maryland.
Upon checking the codes that came up using their handheld diagnostic computer, they indicated to me that the codes were telling them that my car was "running rich". However, after checking just about everything (smoke tested for vacume leaks, replacing slightly leaking PCV hoses & nipple) and driving the car off-and-on for about 4-days, they saw no true indications that the car had an air/fuel mixture problem, even though the Trionic control unit registerd that the fuel trim was out of range. So, in essence, they were at a loss.
The shop's final recommendation was to replace the "Trionic" computer control unit. However, they would not guarentee that this would solve the problem. This is an expensive proposition has they quoted me $900.00 for this replacing the control unit, and labor.
Has anyone else had this experience? Could it really be the Trionic control unit? And, should this really cost me $900.00? Ouch!!! What would you do in this situation? I really want to keep this car for another 2-3 years.
Thanks in advance for any assistance/comments/feedback.
