Well, you could do a detailed analysis by wiring the AC fan directly and testing for resistance etc at the fan point (accessed by the whiper area). I think there are some posts around by DEAN which detailed the procedure. From the sounds of it, what you probably have a is a case of the ACC fan controller blues. This is somewhat common and not a hard thing to fix. The ACC fan controller will require that you take off the passenger side panel on the center area, left to the footrest of the passenger. Removing these things can be tricky because when they get old, the plastic tabs used to clip it in place get brittle and break easily. You might have to remove the glove box as well.
As far as testing, when mine went bad, the ECON option would work, but the ACC would die almost instantly upon engaging. There are many posts about this issue some more detailed than others. Use the search feature to gather more information. Good luck!
