Hi! I posted last week about my '95 900SET with 104K miles that was burning oil, and it wasn't clear if it was from the engine or turbo.
Well, my mechanic called earlier and said that the plugs were not in great shape, but that 2 in particular seemed to be quite oily. That being said, the car doesn't burn oil on startup, only once it has warmed up, which leads my mechanic to thinking I have a problem with the turbo as well as with the engine, although how serious the engine trouble would be is hard to tell as the plugs would become dirty anyway by burning the oil pushed in by the turbo (but 2 were worse than the others) and that usually a valve problem would lead to oil being burned at startup.
Sooo, I don't know what to think... I've been going through a bit more than a quart per 1K miles, I believe, haven't monitored too closely, will definately start...
For now, the mechanic will put in new plugs (I was boosting only about 1/4 of the way into Yellow) and do an engine cleaning/flush treatment, then fill with fresh oil and new filter, hoping this might help cure a slight engine problem by restoring seals. He suggests I monitor oil consumption and perhaps think about putting in a used turbo (about 200$ + 1hr labour he sais, is this right?) if things don't improve. Any comments on this? Engine work would be much more expensive, but he didn't mention anything else. How much more expensive?
I've never seen smoke out the back when on boost (although the car would boost less and less over the last few weeks), nor on startup, only at idle after the car has warmed. I went up a hill 2 days ago, flooring it to see if it would smoke under load, it didn't partucularly seem to, but when I came to idle, ready to park the car, at this point I could clearly see smoke, so much so it prompted me to take the car to the mechanic the next day.
Mechanic says there's no real danger to burning a little oil for a while, but that it will of course dirty plugs and ruin boost. Is that all it will do to the engine?
Any thoughts? They're much appreciated!
Richard
