The switch turns on the low oil pressure warning light if oil pressure is lost while running. With a bad switch, you will not get that warning. The relief valve regulates oil pressure when things are normal. If that valve sticks in an open postion, you will get reduced oil pressure all of the time that could lead to general destruction of the engine. The switch is easy to diagnose and replace. If you can't see the low oil light symbol when you turn on the ignition and before you start the engine, then is probably failed. As so many fail, some folks with true oil pressure loss are being harmed by that warning system not working. The relief valve can be easily removed for incpection and/or freeing up if needed. This does happen, but its easy to fix in many cases... if you know that there is a problem. You can also get low oil pressure from sludging from, mainly, neglected oil changes with dyno oil. The valve cover can be removed to look for sludge and goo. This is also relatively painless... compared to a siezed engine.
