headlight assembly and the wire clip holding the bulb

Hello. I bought a 1996 900S 4-door hatchback the other week. The first time driving it at night, I noticed that the driver side light was pointing a little off. I figured that I would adjust it later since it wasn't off by much.
One of the bulbs burned out last night, so I bought a pair of bulbs to replace the set. When I opened the cap on the back of the driver side headlight assembly, I saw that the wire clip holding the bulb in place was not attached and that the bulb was loose. I figured that was why it wasn't aiming properly. I also saw a blob of black putty at the top of the clip, about the size and also the consistency of a wad of gum. When I put a mirror on it to see what was going on, I saw that the flange that kept the wire clip in place was missing.
I couldn't get the best look of the other flange on that part of the passenger headlight assembly to compare and had a question. Is this a part of the assembly that can be replaced, or do I need to buy a whole assembly? Also, is this flange plastic or metal and able to be repaired in some way?
One possible solution I came up with was to use a screw with a washer to screw into the assembly to keep the wire clip in place. This is a far-fetched idea without having seen an assembly up close to see if it could work.
Any information about the assembly itself or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
